I am a 3rd generation fisherman here in Fort Lauderdale. My dad is a fisherman, so I grew up in the charter fishing business... in fact, my parents actually met at the dock where I still work today. I fished alongside my father throughout my high school years, as a deckhand on fishing charters as well as fishing the Bahamas Billfish Champion Circuit every year. I got my captain's license the first month I turned 18 years old and have been fishing full time ever since.
Techniques
We drift fish on the reefs during the day, bottom fishing with chunks of squid, ballyhoo and sardines. We fish mainly for snappers, groupers and the whole array of small bottom fish that are good eating. On the day trips, you can also jig (no braided line allowed aboard) or you can flat-line. The mate will rig you up however you ask him to.

Good action on our deep sea fishing trips this week. We're doing great on yellowtail and mangrove snappers. These aren't the biggest fish in the ocean, but they are fun to catch and they are great eating. We're getting into them in around 60ft of water, drifting over the second reef. Along with the yellowtails and mangroves is a nice mix of other bottom species such as grunts, porgies, triggerfish, jacks and sometimes even groupers, which can get decent size. Another good size fish that bites on these trips sometimes is the mutton snapper. Mutton snapper are very smart and it takes an adept fisherman to entice one of these guys to bite. Night fishing is also very good this time of year. Lots of red snapper action and it's a pleasure to fish at night because it is so much cooler out on the water. The daytime trips can be hot. Good thing our boat has air conditioning. Sharks are also hitting at night on some trips. Some fishermen love 'em, some fishermen hate 'em. They are a lot of fun to catch, you just can't eat them. Our party boat fishing trips are catching a lot of snappers lately, especially on the night trips. Mangroves, yellowtails and mutton snappers are all biting pretty good out there. We're getting the biggest and the most snappers on our night anchor trips, where we chum the water to draw the fish to the boat. May and June are always good months for the snapper bite. Some groupers are being caught too. Not in the same numbers as the snapper are biting, but a few groupers are hitting the deck now and again. Plenty of other species such as grunts, porgies, triggerfish, jacks and more are part of the catch too, but the snappers have been king this month. It's been kind of a slow month for our drift fishing trips. It normally gets a little slow in the winter months. We're picking at the fish on the day trips... some kingfish, blackfin tuna, grouper, snapper etc. You have to work for every for you catch, they certainly aren't jumping in the boat. The best fishing lately has been our night anchor trip. At night, snappers come out of the woodwork to feed and they get more aggressive. When we anchor and chum at night, it gives the snappers a scent line that they can follow along right to the back of our boat. It really brings the fish right to us and gets them hungry. In the winter months, snappers go in shallow, sometimes to as shallow as 20-30ft of water. The yellowtails are usually a little on the small side and the mangroves are usually on the large side. What the yellowtails lack in size, they make up for in numbers. We don't crush them every night but when the fishing is good, we can catch more than 100 fish a night among the 15-20 anglers. Steer clear of Saturday nights as it does get very busy then, but most other nights are nice with only a dozen or so people. Good luck fishing out there everyone!

There's a good snapper bite happening in Fort Lauderdale this month. The yellowtail and mangrove snappers are hitting in 40-90ft of water. A few mutton snappers are mixed in as well. We've been concentrating on bottom fishing over the patch reefs and shallower shipwreck spots that we fish. With the strong East winds, we've had this week, it's made it a good time for drifting. When we start deep and get pushed in with the wind, it makes it easier to hold the bottom than if the wind was out of the west and we were getting pushed deeper. Groupers are biting a bit out there too. We don't catch a lot of them but we have pulled in some nice red groupers this week. Some really big reds were caught today and yesterday. Strawberry, coney, black and gag groupers have all made appearances in the fish box of the past week. Picking at the groupers is always fun and are a big hit when you catch them. A line from one of my favorite books, โ€œIt was the best of times, it was the worst of timesโ€ pretty much sums up the fishing this week in Fort Lauderdale. We had some awesome trips where we hit wahoo, mahi-mahi or some big fish off the wrecks and we had some trips where we couldnโ€™t get a bite no matter what we tried. The good news is that the fish are out there, they just arenโ€™t making it easy on us. Dolphin are showing up offshore, in approx **hidden content**ft of water. Thatโ€™s only a couple miles off our coast, so you donโ€™t need to go super far offshore to find them. Itโ€™s best to go trolling for them as you can cover a lot more ground on the move with your lures out. Our trip yesterday was trolling and found some frigate birds flying overhead. They hit a nice school of mahi-mahi and ended up with a great catch. A few big wahoo were also caught this week. We catch them trolling as well, usually on our deep planer baits. Wahoo love deep trolled lures. This is a good month for wahoo in South Florida, as you can catch them at just about any place and at any time. You just need to run over them. Tunas are also biting very good. They are mostly the small to medium sized tunas, but sometimes a big one takes the bait. They are all keepers though and excellent eating size. We had a fishing charter on our higher capacity vessel, the Mary B III and they caught a ton of blackfin tunas, one big blackfin tuna and about 20 big, fat vermillion snappers. Not a bad catch! Tunas are popping up on the reefs, especially in the afternoons. We find them busting small baitfish on the surface and you can see a field of splashes on the top of the water where they are feeding. We troll around these fields of tuna with some natural feathers and small, streamline lures for the best results, and we can usually catch a nice bunch of them before we spook the school and they disappear. Wrecks are holding some nice fish too. Some big amberjacks are showing up on our **hidden content**ft deep shipwrecks as they always do this time of year. This is the month of the amberjackโ€™s migration through south Florida as they congregate around the wrecks to feed on the abundance of small fish that also congregate on the wrecks. Iโ€™m not sure where they go after they move through our waters, but they will be here through the end of June and then disappear. Groupers, cobia, snapper and tilefish are also biting good around these shipwrecks. When we canโ€™t find anything trolling, hitting the wrecks is a good, high-percentage way to put fish in the boat. To sum it all up, there is some good fishing out there but the fish are not making it easy on us. You just have to fish hard and put in the time. Good luck to everyone fishing this week with us. The snappers are biting great in Fort Lauderdale this week. Our best trips have been either in the afternoons (drift fishing) or on our night trips (anchor fishing). Yellowtail snappers are biting better and better every day. Mutton snappers are also biting good, and they are the biggest snappers. Mangroves are biting decently too, mostly on the night trips. We're also catching the entire array of other bottom fish species such as grunts, porgies, groupers, jacks, triggers, etc... We're getting pretty good action these days on our Fort Lauderdale fishing trips.
