My name is Leonardo, better known as Leo, I come from a family of several generations of sea wolves, born and raised in Rabo de Peixe.

I have maritime knowledge that life has brought me, through my ancestors and life lived at sea, with a real traditional fishing vessel, made by my own father called “Leonardo da Gilda”.

My main fishing style is squid fishing, using sustainable and environmentally friendly methods, helping above all to preserve our precious asset, the sea.
In addition to fishing for squid, you can also fish with me for other listed species, with notice at the time of booking.

On our trip, you will also be able to discover the famous cave where the story that ended up becoming the Netflix series “Turn of the Tide” was born.
If you're lucky, you'll even be able to see dolphins that regularly accompany us on our trips to the sea.

We always recommend bringing sunglasses, as well as sunscreen, but if you forget yours, we have one for you, as well as snacks and water.
Alcoholic drinks are permitted in small quantities.

Good Shore Fishing Despite Rain

4 Hour Trip – Costal Fishing (AM) on September 23, 2025 • 2 adults

Arrived at location at 8 am in overcast conditions. Captain advised that rain was in the forecast aand if we wanted to proceed. we decided to go ahead. Boarded boat and stored our gear and set out. About 30 minutes in the rain started light but waves were ok . Caught a couple small fish that we released. Leonardo got us onto some fish and assisted with baiting and we soon caught a couple of keepers. We continued in this manner for a couple hours getting about six keepers. The rain did persist, not cold but we did get soaked. Caught a 2.5 ft baracuda trolling back to the dock. Leo cleaned the fish for us and sent us on our way. Would defintely do it again

GREAT fishing trip!

This was a great fishing trip! Leo is a pro fisherman, with all the experience that comes from generations of azores fisherman. My son (who loves fishing) had the best time catching fish that we could never catch in the US where we live. My son can be hard to please, but he loves everything about it. We caught squid, rockfish, grouper, and other exotic (to us) fish. It was one of the most fun things we’ve done here. 5 stars for Leo’s fishing tour!

Unique hands on experience

Captain Leo clearly loves sharing his traditional knowledge with clients. He let us do as much as we were comfortable with, which meant we could drop the bait, monitor depth, and detect bites, and reel up the fish. He was very helpful teaching and showing, and he would go through the motions for us if we asked. We got some extra time fishing as he didn’t have clients after us. The other client called him a “fishing nut”, we could tell Capt Leo didn’t want to stop. Perfect qualities for a guide. He also instructed us how to prepare the fish as well. If you want a more hands on and unique experience we highly recommend Captain Leo.

Very nice fishing trip with a knowlegeable captain

We went on a fishing trip with Captain Leo for our friend's birthday, who is an avid fisherman. Captain Leo was very kind and endeavored to provide for us a save and relaxed experience. This fishing trip provides a unique experience to those who wish to learn the traditional azorean way of fishing and is worlds apart from the trips you'd find in large touristic ports. The special technique he explained to us proved it's worth, and we went home with a couple of fish and several giant squid. We would recommend Captain Leo to any of our friends and if we ever come back to Sao Miguel, we'll make sure to be back on his boat.

I had an incredible time on this fishing trip! The captain was friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure everyone felt comfortable, even if you were a beginner. The boat was clean and well-equipped, and we got to see some beautiful views of the coastline while fishing.I highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting the area who wants a mix of adventure, relaxation, and great memories. I’ll definitely book again next time!
