This is one of my favorite trips. The state of Oklahoma puts in a lot of walleye and saugeye into our state waters. Sooner is stocked with Saugeye. Oologah is stocked with Walleys. Walleye on Oologah are more miss than hit. Saugeye on Sooner are prevalent. We always catch them! I've had better days but no horrible ones.
Sooner is a 2.5 hr drive from my house. So we make a full day of it. It's just as much fun for me as my clients. It breaks the monotony of my home lake fishing. People go crazy around here for walleye and saugeye. I very rarely book walleye trips on Oologah because its hard to target them and produce, however I'm pretty good at Saugeye on Sooner. So it's a great time.
Sooner not only holds Saugeye but is loaded with the pesky an invasive White Perch. We have to keep or kill them in this lake. It's also loaded with Hybrid White Bass but we're only targeting Saugeye on this trip.
The limit is 6 per person per day and there is an 18in length minimum. We catch a lot of under sized. My preferred technique is bottom bouncing with worms on a spinning rig. Sometimes we spot lock and jig for them as well. We lean hard on the electronics to find them. Sidescan and Livescope are our friends. Summertime is the best time to go. I block out the rest of the year on this lake to fish other species elsewhere. So trips are limited.
It can get hot and windy on this lake. I sometimes have a top on the boat if we need it to block the sun. Bring drinks and snacks. The lake is a power plant lake and I don't think alcohol is allowed. Sorry.
Everyone over 18 will need an Oklahoma fishing license. It's available online at Oklahoma Dept of Wildlife Conservation website. I will supply all the rods and reels and bait. I clean your fish at the end of the day.
