Vissen in Kitimat

Welcome to Kitimat, British Columbia, a premier fishing destination where the Kitimat River merges with the Douglas Channel, creating unparalleled freshwater and saltwater opportunities. This region is celebrated for its abundant salmon runs, particularly the formidable Chinook (King) salmon averaging 15–25 pounds, with trophies reaching 40–50 pounds, and acrobatic Coho salmon peaking from late summer through October.

Anglers enjoy year-round action here, from spring steelhead fishing in the Kitimat River's dynamic gravel runs to salmon pursuits in the estuary on incoming tides. The diversity extends to Coastal Cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and access to halibut or crab when transitioning to saltwater. Driftboat excursions along the river’s 20+ kilometers of prime holding waters and estuary casting deliver consistent catches amid breathtaking coastal wilderness.

Beyond fishing, the Douglas Channel offers wildlife encounters with migrating killer whales (June) and humpbacks (August), complemented by sightings of bald eagles, bears, and dolphins. Guided charters leverage local expertise for tailored experiences, whether fly fishing for steelhead or battling ocean-fresh Chinook. With its unique river-to-ocean ecosystem and uncrowded waters, Kitimat stands as a top-tier destination for both novice and seasoned anglers seeking adventure in British Columbia’s pristine landscapes.

Kitimat Visseizoenen

Januari
North winds will keep you close to shore in January. In the Douglas Channel you can catch smaller Salmon, as well as Cutthroat Trout in the Kitimat River.
Februari
Water levels are lower on the Kitimat River in February, though the clarity is good. Trout fishing will be productive when using small lures and live bait, and you can catch spring Salmon in the Douglas Channel.
Maart

Salmon are still shy in the Kitimat River, but the Steelhead season begins in March, and the bite gets better as the month progresses. Douglas Channel provides good amounts of spring feeding Salmon.

April

Spring is in full swing, and Salmon are moving to the rivers from the Douglas Channel. Coho and Chinook Salmon are the most popular catch, and they can weigh 70+ pounds.

Mei

Now is the peak of Steelhead fishing in the Kitimat River, but bear in mind you’re only allowed to keep the hatchery fish. On the saltwater front, Salmon is biting left and right, and you can catch big ones.

Juni

If you’re coming to Kitimat to hunt Chinook Salmon, June is your month, especially the second half. In the Douglas Channel, you can catch a variety of Salmon – Pink, Chum, Coho, and Chinook.

Juli

The river levels will be higher as the snow melts, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting out and catching copious amounts of Chinook Salmon on the Kitimat River.

Augustus

The Chinook bite is waning, but no worries, because Coho is about to take the stage. Both in the Kitimat River and in the Douglas Channel, the Coho bite is best after the rain, when the water clears out.

September

The first half of September is the peak season for hooking Coho Salmon. Toward the end of the month, the waters are getting murkier, and Coho are starting to become darker, but there’s still plenty to catch.

Oktober

Heavy autumn rains are raising the river levels, and are also making the water muddy, and fishing more difficult. Coho Salmon is still popular, but most don’t have their silver glow anymore.

November

The weather is cooling down, which makes it a bit difficult to chase Salmon or Trout, but you can still cast your line at the head end of the Douglas Channel and hook a Coho or two.

December

In December, the winds are treacherous and it’s cold on the water, but it could pay off after you catch several big Steelhead. You can also go after jumbo prawns, which are fun to catch and delicious to eat.
