Vissen in Zihuatanejo

It may not get as much pomp as Cabo or Cancun, but Zihuatanejo is one of Mexico’s best holiday and fishing destinations. Its small-town vibes give you a feeling for the culture of the town, and it punches well above its weight when it comes to angling opportunities. Let a Zihuatanejo fishing adventure take you in search of prized creatures and plenty to put in your tacos!

Inshore, nearshore, offshore, Zihuatanejo has it all – and all within a few minutes from shore. The town’s eponymous bay lies just out of downtown and offers up beauties such as Trevally, Jack Crevalle, Jacks, Yellowtails, Mackerel, and the exotic Roosterfish. Come at the right time of year, and the tough-fighting, elusive Black Snook will be biting, too.

Head a little further out, and hit the reefs that are home to some real meaty creatures. Snappers, Groupers, and Needlefish are the most common catches when bottom fishing, but you’re not too far from the big game grounds, either. As little as 5 miles from shore, you can find stunning Sailfish, Wahoo, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Blue and Black Marlin to keep you on your toes.

Families and beginners can spend a few hours on the water at very affordable prices, with fishing and snorkeling combos available inshore. While you can, in theory, catch some monsters on a shorter trip, you’ll want to spend a full day to make the most of the offshore fishery. Avid anglers can even hop aboard a Zihuatanejo fishing charter for over 10 hours!

Wet- en Regelgeving

While most Zihuatanejo fishing charters will have your license covered for you, it’s not a rule of thumb. Check with your captain when booking to see if you need to get your own. Your professional guide will also be able to advise on the latest seasonality, and bag and size limits.

Zihuatanejo Visseizoenen

Januari

Whether you’d like to hook a Sailfish, Black Marlin, or Yellowfin Tuna, January is the month to visit Zihuatanejo. The Wahoo bite is also very good, and Grouper are active as well.

Februari

The mild winter temperatures and calm waters allow for excellent Sailfish and Black Marlin bites, and an occasional Striped Marlin could surprise you. You can also snag Tuna or Wahoo.

Maart

The spring is fast approaching, which means Blue Marlin are coming back to the Zihuatanejo waters. Inshore, Roosterfish are waking up, and Snapper and Grouper are not giving up either.

April

All Marlin relatives (Blue, Black, Striped) are on everyone’s to-catch list, while Sailfish is hiding moreso than usual. Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and Roosterfish are all up and biting.

Mei

If you prefer offshore adventures, May is the best month to come to Zihuatanejo. Billfish are in a frenzy during this month, and Yellowfin Tuna and Mahi Mahi aren’t far behind.

Juni

As Black Marlin leave the stage, Blue Marlin start taking over along with Sailfish, who are becoming more aggressive as the days are getting warmer. Get yourself a picture-perfect catch!

Juli

Fishing for both Tuna and Mahi Mahi is superb in July, as long as a Sailfish doesn’t snag your lure first. Sails are so numerous, that it’s quite difficult to target anything without reeling in a Sailfish!

Augustus

This is your last chance to catch a trophy Blue Marlin, as they slowly move out of these waters. It’s quite hot out in August, but neither Mahi Mahi or Tuna mind the heat, so why should you?

September

Sailfish is the only Billfish that loves to stay in the waters around Zihuatanejo all year, so you can still catch them in decent numbers in the deep, along with Mahi Mahi and Roosterfish inshore.

Oktober

Slightly colder weather doesn’t mean the fishing is bad, it’s just closer to shore! Anglers are catching big Roosterfish everyday, as well as Black Snook, Mahi Mahi, and Grouper.

November

The November bite brings a healthy amount of Wahoo, Tuna, and Mahi Mahi into the game, while Sailfish remain anglers’ most-prized catch. Roosters are equally popular inshore, so get your fill of fish!

December

Black and Striped Marlin are coming back, and Sailfish never left, which makes December one of the best months to spend some time in Zihuatanejo fishing for big game action. Wahoo and Tuna are biting, too.
