The Cape Lookout fishing scene is one of the best you can find, not only in NC, but on the entire Atlantic Coast. This barrier island is only accessible by boat, and ferry tickets usually sell out during high season. So, why not skip all of that?! Book a trip on the mainland with a local fishing guide, and beat the crowds on your way to the island – and beyond – for a catch!

 

A local favorite is Little Tunny (False Albacore). These fish aren’t targeted for their taste, but for the amazing action they provide. They’re very fast and challenging to target on a fly. You can also go after Redfish, Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Shark, and Flounder. For those eager to land a huge trophy, offshore trips could bring Wahoo, Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, or Yellowfin Tuna.

 

Fishing at Cape Lookout is a year-round activity but two periods stand out – spring season (April and May) and fall season (from late September–November). The fall season is particularly popular for big schools of Redfish, Little Tunny, and Shark. You can reach their spots even on a half day trip, but lots of fishing guides are ready to dedicate a full eight hours to nearshore fishing, as it’s so rewarding. Gulf Stream trips require more dedication, so they vary from 8–14 hours.
