Fishing is nothing short of outstanding right now on the reefs and wrecks off of Bradenton. I have never seen such a variety of fish around at any given time. We fished a full day yesterday on mostly live bottom and natural reef structure. The goal was keeper red grouper. Not only did we capture 6 beautiful grouper, we caught sharks, false albacore, lane, vermillion, and mangrove snapper, jack crevalle, and barracuda! We also hooked a nice kingfish and saw 2 cobia. There were massive pods of threadfin herring all over between the beach and the nearshore reefs. Chasing these awesome baits were every game fish in the Gulf! While there are hundreds of tarpon migrating through and eating the threadfin herring, don't forget about the hundreds of other awesome game fish doing the same thing off the beach. Free lined threadfin and dead sardines on the bottom seem to be the ticket right now. If you want to fill the freezer give us a call! If you want to pull on sharks, false albacore, and jacks! We had a fun past couple of weeks of fishing! The mangrove snapper bite has turned on, and we are getting some fat ones! We have also been able to find some nice size kingfish and amberjacks patrolling the reefs around 7 miles offshore. We have been catching the majority of our fish on dead bait fished on the surface and on the bottom. There have been some nice gag grouper around also. They just opened on June 1st and they are a very tasty fish and a great fighter. We are definitely in our spring bite now! The fishing is great on the near shore reefs and inshore the tarpon are here in great numbers. What a great time of year to come out and catch a variety of fish! This week we have had to cancel some trips due to wind and rain. Next week looks fabulous with light winds and just a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Captain Doug Deming has reported some really nice numbers of snook caught on the grass flats of Tampa Bay, along with some nice trout action and a few redfish. Fishing is finally heating up again offshore of St. Pete. We have seen the return of the False Albacore and Amberjacks fairly close to the beach. We have been catching them on light tackle over wrecks on live pilchards and jigs. The bottom bite has also picked up, with lots of large Key West Grunts coming up, along with Red Grouper and a variety of other fun species. Heavy live chumming has been the key to success to draw in the pelagic fish. Inshore, Captain Doug Deming has been finding fair numbers of Snook and Redfish with a few Trout mixed in. The Tarpon are starting to show up in good numbers on the beaches and passes. Some of the best fishing of the year is beginning in the Tampa Bay area! FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 3RD 2017 Fishing has continued to get better for Spanish Mackeral and Kingfish. There are large numbers of Kingfish on the nearshore reefs, but they are on the small size. Lots of small keepers. There are huge schools of Spanish Mackeral making their way into Tampa Bay. It is pretty easy to get a limit of 15 Spanish per person right now using clark spoons or live pilchards in the bay. The fish are chasing huge schools of small sardines as they come into the bay from the gulf. Bottom fishing has continued to be hit and miss. The Goliath Grouper are biting well, but the Mangrove Snappers are continuing to be a bit elusive. The inshore bite is very consistent, with loads of snook biting near oyster bars in the South part of the bay. Also the Trout bite has been very good on grass flats from 4-6 ft of water on live pilchards. The Kingfish and Spanish are a great fight on light tackle, and they are here in great numbers right now! Another awesome week of fishing!! I had a regular client of mine from Jupiter, Florida come to St. Pete. He loves to catch big fish, so I hooked him up on 5 goliath grouper and plenty of sharks!! We fished two days together and we caught a lot of fish. Both days the seas were 4-6 ft, not exactly calm days. We fished 9 miles offshore on a few artificial wrecks, and without having to use live bait or any bait for that matter, we were able to catch our limit of kingfish and spanish mackerel casting clark spoon within the first hour of each day. Then it was on to shark and goliath fishing the rest of the day. There must be hundreds of goliath grouper on the reefs, because we could have hooked up each time we dropped bait down. It was hard to catch a shark, the goliath would get the bait before the shark often times. We used filets of bonito to catch the goliath groupers and the sharks. Both days we had a live well full of pilchards, and we hardly used any of them. When you wanted to catch a surface fish, just cast a clark spoon and retrieve. It was a great week of fishing!!
