Fun half day trip with the crew! They knew where to go for starting the trip and worked hard to get us on some fish when it got slow!

Our situation was unique. My wife and I were traveling on a cruise ship and wanted our own fishing excursion on the day we stopped at Puntarenas Pier in Costa Rica.  The rates were running roughly $2000 for an offshore trip and $1000 for an inshore trip.  Offshore trips ran out 35-45 miles for Marlin/Tuna/Wahoo/Mahi and the Inshore trips were for Roosterfish and Snapper. Normally, I contact captains directly but I saw there was a long drive from the cruise ship terminal to where the boats were so I decided to try the FishingBooker website.  2 days before docking we found out it was going to be another $220 for the transport RT.  Fishing Booker takes a 20% fee of the charter and then you pay the Captain the balance.  The other challenge was the cruise ship docked at 7am. (on our day it was 1 hour late). The morning trips leave at 7am so at best we would not get to the boat until 8am.  Since the ship was late arriving, our trip did not start until 9am. I selected this boat because according to the Fishing Booker website information, the vessel had a fighting chair (fixed chair with arms) which I needed for fishing since I had recent Hip Surgery. I selected a 1/2 day trip knowing website said mostly nearshore (roosterfish) and not involving a longer run offshore for Tuna/Marlin/Dolphin. Tatiana did an excellent job coordinating transportation from the Cruise Ship Terminal to the Charter Boat.  We were taken to a beach where a water taxi took us out to the boat.  When we boarded, we were informed the Tuna Bite was “off the chain” yesterday (normally awesome news). There were 2 mates and 1 captain for 2 customers on a 28’ Bertram. Fighting Chair replaced with Rocket Launcher and all tackle was setup for offshore.  The Captain was willing to run out 40 miles to get to the fish and still have us back in time for the ship but with me being on a cane and no fighting chair onboard, there was no stable place for me to sit.  So we did an inshore trip which usually involved spinning tackle) with offshore gear (50lb class). The trip was a bust. The ship being late didn’t help. The Miscommunication between Angler/Booking Engine/Captain didn’t help.  Having 2 mates, 1 captain on a 28’ Bertram for 2 anglers smelled like a “meat trip” (you can’t bring fish back onto the cruise ship) and then choking my wife out as the black smoke from the diesels engulfed the cockpit until the boat hit full cruising speed didn’t help. Would recommend this boat/captain/crew for a group of guys looking for an offshore tuna trip for 1/2 the price of the Los Suenos Boats.  These old diesels are smokey but for our trip, not a good match for a couple senior citizens.
