We did a half day fishing with Rory from Cairns,
He was very knowledgable, had a heap of tricks up his sleeve. Very tidy boat and good quality fishing gear. Rory put us onto a great topwater session on queenfish. Bonus points for spotting a couple of crocs on the way back to the ramp.
Would definately reccomend.

Skipper Nick assured me from the very outset, that where others claimed a decent Barra could not be bagged this time of year; he would deliver, and he did.
His knowledge of the Cairns estuaries, is beyond just one man’s efforts in a lifetime. I took the benefits from his families generations of local knowledge.
Nick took me from being a Barra virgin, with no technique or smarts. To fishing just like him and becoming a Barra master, all in a day.
He was never disappointed with my failed efforts, kept encouraging me, and mentoring me, right up until that moment of the first Barra strike - a total monster. A fish way beyond my experience to land. Easily over 100cm. On its second run from the boat up to the sky it raced, turned its head on the surface at the boat and spat the lure straight back at us.
Nick made certain my first Barra action was not going to be my last. We discussed what had happened and what changes I needed to make with playing the fish. I took the understanding that you can’t just pull them in like a reef fish. There is a finesse required; the mastering over one’s reflexes and not rip at the fish, but rather, allowing the fish to dance, to the sound of your music.
The planets lined up and we got the job done. My first Barra landed and in the bag. A beautiful fish, worthy of a photo and certainly delicious to eat.
Skipper Nick, the ultimate sports fishing coach. There is no doubt about it, irrespective of you ability. Even Tiger Woods uses a coach. I will be back in Barra prime time with you Skip.

My fishing buddy and I spent two half days with Rory - day 1 chasing barra and day 2 on the blue water.  Both were great experiences.  We casted a lot of lures on day 1, using Rory’s excellent side scan to reveal fish in waterways that went from brown to clear..  We both boated barra on day one and Rory too showed us some excellent new techniques for identiofying good barra places.  The country was amazing and the fish were abundant in places, if a little selective in their feeding.

On day 2 we went to two wreck sites off shore, and chased a school of Tuna.  We also saw saltwater barra and salmon on the sounder but they refused to cooperate.  On the way back in we fished some coral flats and caught a nice coral trout, the only fish we killed.  There was also the inevitable, small cod.

We both caught new species e.g. jungle perch and telopea and learned a lot for a patient and clear guide in Rory.  We would definitely repeat the experience.  Rory is a lure/fly fisherman (only) and while this might reduce the number of fish boated, it does give the angler a great sense of achievement when a fish is landed.  Five stars from us.

I had an excellent morning, Rory was an excellent guide and saw a saltwater Croc close up!
I didn’t catch anything but that was my fault for getting over excited and not listening to Rory’s advice properly.

Couldn’t be happier with the charter, Rory worked extremely hard to put us on fish constantly. He showed us a wide range of techniques and was willing to share his knowledge. A great guy who knows how to fish.
