It was a slow morning for Jeff and Jenn, but after the tide started moving we found some action. Billfish was request and that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. We pulled the hook on stripe one, released one, and had one trying to eat the teaser as I was letting it out. Unfortunately we just weren’t ready and didn’t have anything in the water for it turn on. Released a sail in the mix and ended up pulling the hook on a blue as we started to pick up for the day. Soooo close to a slam, but I don’t think Jeff could have been much happier. The Tresser boys hadn’t had enough, on day one, so they opted to for more marlin on their second day. We lost a stripe after about about five minutes of lines in. I don’t think Ben really understood just how fast these fish are when it came time to reel fast. Unfortunately we slacked him off, but after a few hours and a couple table fish, a big girl showed up to eat. Two and half hours later, we released a nice blue and they said enough was enough. Couple of good ones after a slow start proving that it’s never over till it’s over. We found what appeared to be ”the spot” with blue water, bait, birds picking around, and a bit of current. After having several mahi come to the teasers and only one commiting to a bait, it wasn’t looking the way we suspected. I was marking fish all over the place, so we just ground it out hoping that someone would flip the switch and it finally happened around 1:00. We released our first marlin after a perfect pitch bite around 2. We reset and circled the wagons. At 2:30 we had our second that absolutely exploded on a lure and was released around 3:15 to let us finish on about as high a note as anyone could ask for. Fred and his son Bear joined us for a few and ticked about all the boxes you can. Day one was meat fishing for the time they were down and caught tuna and mahi to the point they were worried about a big bite. Day two and three were focus on billfish and these guys proved to be machines. After releasing a few sails, we had one of the biggest Striped Marlin I’ve seen ignore all the tackle ready for him and ate one of the two ballyhoo on a 20. After right at three hours Fred released his first stripe. I have to hand it to him. Not too many people can endure that kind of time on the rod. The fish was still green at boat side and wasn’t having any part of Bear holding his bill for a photo op. Honesty, I don’t think Bear was either when that fish was showing him who’s boss. Our final day resulted in more meat fish released and just as the day before finished with Bear releasing his first blue just as his dad did the day before after two hours on the rod. Not a bad first trip offshore while on your honeymoon for the Vinsons. The day started off on fire as we stopped at several floating trees that produced some nice mahi on our 30 mile run to find a marlin. Once we arrived it didn’t take long for the action to start. We put a couple more mahi on the boat, broke of a sailfish at the boat that spent more time in the air than it did in the water, and then we got the bite we were looking for. A perfect sized stripe marlin to roll out the welcoming mat and put on a show. Unfortunately, the bite died as quickly as it happened and we had a lull before finding a floating platform that was filled with fish. We picked a few more mahi off and then decided to just stop the boat and jig it to see what was home. I think they enjoyed watching the fish as much as catching them. We caught bonita, sharks, blue runners, small Yellowfin tuna, and a wahoo. It was something in just about every drop and perfect action after a couple hours no bites. We tried livebaiting with a couple of the Yellowfin to see if a marlin may have been lurking, but no dice. Great trip for the boys from Sweden. They joined us while they’re buddies we’re back home freezing. After a trip out of Samara where they had their fill of mahi, they wanted to go find a marlin and I was perfectly okay with that. We pushed out a bit further in hopes of getting past the massive biomass of dorado that are here right now and found some blue water with scattered schools of Bonita and figured that should be the spot. After catching and releasing probably a dozen random mahi, we finally had the right one on the teaser and Flaco made the perfect pitch to get a spectacular bite from this marlin right off the transom. This guy put on a show that couldn’t have been written any better and wore these guys out. They couldn’t wait for the photos to send back to their boys sitting in ice huts.
