- Captain Casey has fished his whole life. He started fishing professionally in high school as a mate on a 6-pack charter boat out of Niantic, Connecticut for Striped Bass and Bluefish and did the occasional trip 100 miles offshore to the continental shelf. He went on to college at Massachusetts Maritime Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science in marine safety and environmental protection. While he was attending college, Captain Casey got his U.S.C.G. 100 ton captain's license with a towing endorsement. Upon graduation, he moved to the Florida Keys and has been fishing full time as a captain or mate since 2015 for everything the Florida Keys have to offer.
- Techniques
- The captain considers a great thing about fishing in Tavernier that there is always something to target. In the summer with hot weather and warmer water, he concentrates on using light tackle for Mahi Mahi and Blackfin Tuna as well as being prepared for the opportunity at Blue Marlin or big shark (only a couple of opportunities a year but always prepared). In the wintertime, he also specializes in light tackle but most of the fishing he does is kite fishing with live bait on the edge of the reef. The reason he's using this kite fishing technique on the edge of the reef is because of the abundance of bait and the higher concentration of pelagic species feeding on them.
