The Pompano are staging in their winter haunts and are ready to go! These speedsters move in and out with the tides, and having a local bead on their habits and optimal conditions is crucial for hooking up with them consistently. They can bite on a variety of set-ups, but I always go back to my reliable standbys. I like a chartreuse/pink/white weighted banana jigs tipped with shrimp and bounced in the current! When you feel the the quick bite be ready with a fast hookset and your off to the races! With the arrival of cooler water temperatures in the Gulf, the drum are easily targeted and very tasty on the table too! False Albacore “aka bonito” running the beaches now chasing bait in full view - an adrenaline pumping sight to say the least?!! The key is having the baitfish ready to go quickly and throwing it to them when they are spotted coming in and waiting for the explosive strike which is usually visual making it most dramatic. In addition, January marks the onset of our Pompano season when the gulf temps hover in the sixities! 67 to 72 degrees is prime water temperture for these well known battlers! Great fishing on a cold morning with the Heereema family of 8. Large parties over 6 people is our specialty! This is important when you all want to fish together as a group and everyone is involved! Fish caught include: Sheepshead, Black drum, whiting and various species of shark. With the colder gulf temps brings on the cold water fish with most being legal to keep and eat.
