Reef Fishing from Cairns, in Far North Queensland with fishing guide Darryl. Over the winter months in the tropics some years mother nature is kind too us with only a few days of South Easterly. This year we have been blasted with them; this lessen our day we can operate a reef fishing charter. However, we keenly watched the weather forecasts regularly and organise a number of charters. We eagerly waited until September for good size Spanish Mackerel to appear and on a few occasions where not disappointed. On one charter managed to catch and release a Rainbow Runner (normally seen in PNG waters). Most days where hard work and with a lot of hunting to find; all charters came back with a good selection of Large Mouth Nannygai and Coral Trout to name a few.

Mother nature is only just now allowing us to organise and conduct charters on the reef from Cairns, FNQ for this winter. A small window has opened up in the past couple days, previous we have only been able to get an odd day here and there. Target Species including trolling for Spanish Mackerel and bait fishing Large Mouth Nannygai.

Kane and his family absolutely picked the best day so far of the year. Apart from the great day on the water while fishing the hump back whales produced a brilliant show; never to be forgotten. Over the past couple of weeks the air temperature has decreased for during the day and night. This has seen the fishing change; change from our summer species to our winter species. Their is a occasional barramundi being caught; over the cooler months they only occasionally feed. Target species over the cooler months may include Fingermark, Trevally, Queen fish, Estuary Cod, Bream, Silver Jew Fish, Grunter, Flathead, Blue Thread Fin and King Thread Fin. The Mulgrave and Russell Rivers and Mutchero Inlet (40 kms south of Cairns) has kicked in for the winter months with Giant Trevally and Queen Fish entering the system in schools. A River Fishing Charter is a fantastic option for the keen fisherperson using poppers and live baits; this can be a great option when the weather is too windy on the reef for bottom fishing.
