Hello everyone Capt. Vinnie here, so for this week in Fort Lauderdale seems like fishing has been picking up for the better which would be right on par for spring time. Starting off trolling the reef it has been somewhat quiet but there has been kind of a consistent bite with some kingfish in depths around 100 feet. Trolling with switches and planers is always our go to and the best choice of baits has been a pink seawitch on our long planer side and a chartreuse on our short side, fresh bonito is hard to come by right now so we have been using mostly frozen bonito strips but we also have been fishing a double hook ballyhoo and that has been getting some of the bigger kings. Kite fishing has been picking up as well right now, majority of our kingfish have been being caught with live bait fished from a kite, live goggle eyes have been the baits of choice. The kingfish have been anywhere from 10-30lbs with the live baits. Moving offshore there has been a few stray mahi around like last weeks report. No rhyme or reason as to why they all have been random, but some nice size ones around 10lbs give or take. The afternoons still have been producing black fin tunas and smaller bonitos, some days better then others. The small spoon continues to be my number one choice, specially if your just looking to get some bites. Small squid lures on the surface have been a good choice as well. The further back you fish your lures the more bites. Last but not least, bottom fishing has been steady and seems to be our saving grace. This week we had some great conditions earlier in the week and were able to fish a few spots that we are not able to hit because we need those picture perfect conditions. Dropping some live baits on deeper bottom spots produced a beautiful trophy red snapper that was 26lbs (pictured). We don't catch many red snapper in our area like the gulf side so when we do its always special. Also this week we did catch for our area a Bahamas sized yellow eye snapper around 6lbs (pictured). Definitely some true quality, other then that when the conditions allow bottom fishing has been good on most bottom spots around 250-300 feet. Mostly vermillion snappers but some nice yellow eyes mixed in here and there and if luck is on your side possibly a jumbo red snapper too. We were out today and the sailfish action was on, so that is a huge positive, I think the cold front that we just had was the one we needed to get the fish moving, other then sailfish the kingfish action should remain steady all the way through the summer, as well as some of our bigger blackfin tunas moving through the area.
