Reef Fishing on Fire

Beautiful conditions today out of Islamorada and the fish were chewing. We put together a great catch with several quality mutton snapper, a big margate, and a solid black grouper coming off the bottom. The mutton bite has been strong lately with fish responding well to fresh bait. The margate and grouper came while working deeper structure, and overall the action stayed steady throughout the trip. Mahi have been showing up in good numbers, and our recent 8-hour trip proved it. We kicked things off by spotting a nice cow mahi under birds — pitched a live pilchard and she crushed it immediately. After putting her in the box, we switched it up and went on the troll. That move paid off — we ran into a school of mahi and started pitching more live pilchards, keeping them fired up around the boat. The action was steady and fun, and we ended the day with 15 mahi in the cooler.
