This was an excellent trip for 6 Canadian Fishers who had never been out for real deep sea fishing! Despite some of our weak stomaches on the boat, we had a great experience doing a half day of fishing with Maikel, Milton and Victor who are true professionals and fun at the same time!
Upon arriving at the beach they were right on time, helped us easily on to the boat and we had a good chat regarding exactly what we wanted to get out of the day. We decided to shoot for the trophy fish as there had been good luck that week from them and other boats catching Marlin and Sailfish (Catch and release species in Costa Rica). We then set out off shore for about 45 minutes before they set out all the lures and we were off. We set a catch order for the 6 of us, as there is one main fishing chair, and quickly got a small Mahi Mahi and Tuna on deck. In this time they set up some super fresh pineapple right there on the boat and provided us with beer, pop and water to drink. We also managed to see dolphins which came right up to the boat and turtles all over. We then moved spots a bit while trolling and quickly caught a big Mahi Mahi. Upon getting the Mahi Mahi on board we got our pictures with it and they quickly filleted it and put it on ice for us (we got to take home all of the 4 fillets and make it into some amazing ceviche and tacos!) After this they provided us with some salsa and chips for a snack. We then continued fishing and caught one more small Mahi Mahi and a Skipjack Tuna.
As there was 6 of us, we unfortunately did not each get to real in a fish; however, the captains apologized and said this was quite a slow day for them (we understood that they cannot control this) and we also had two sailfish hit and one jump near us that we just couldnโt quite hook. They had 8 rods out at all time, were very attentive to the rods and incredibly quick to respond to hits, and they gave great direction on how to best handle the gear. The boat was also in great shape and comfortable for all 6 of us, and although the bathroom was small, it is a huge luxury on a boat and we greatly appreciated it.
Overall if you are new I would highly advise getting some anti-nausea medications to avoid getting sick, however the ride was excellent and the crew even better.
Could not recommend anymore and will definitely be back out with Rhino Charger Sportfishing if we make it back to Tamarindo one day!
