While I understand that fishing can be unpredictable, something about this particular charter didn’t feel right. Although the crew was polite, their approach felt more like they were just going through the motions rather than truly engaging with us.
The trip began with live bait, but instead of the hands-on experience I was expecting, we were simply told to hold the fishing poles while they trolled around. It didn’t feel right. We trolled with live bait for quite a while without any success. Later, the crew switched to diving lures, which did result in a bite, but unfortunately, the fish was lost at the boat. When we targeted mahi and marlin, they drove out a bit, but it didn’t seem far enough offshore to actually give us a chance; the trolling speed also seemed unusually fast, which might have reduced our chances.
Adding to the frustration, the mate took over driving the boat for the last two hours of the trip, leaving us at the bottom of the boat with little to do. The most disheartening part came at the end when the captain announced that the trip was over and then sped back to the dock, causing most of us to get wet. It was a frustrating end to an already disappointing day. While I’m sure the captain didn’t intend to make things worse, a bit more consideration would have gone a long way.
Due to this experience, I decided to cancel another booking I had with this company, even at the cost of losing a deposit. We opted for a different charter with another company and had a far better experience.
In summary, if you’re looking to actually catch fish and enjoy your time on the water, I’d suggest looking elsewhere.
